North Korea appears to have fired ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan early Wednesday, the Japanese government said, adding that no damage to aircraft or ships has so far been reported.

The missiles appear to have been launched from the country’s southwest, beginning at around 4 a.m.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe instructed government offices to collect and analyze intelligence in coordination with the United States and South Korea, and provide relevant information to the public in a timely manner, according to the government.

Tokyo plans to lodge a protest with Pyongyang over the alleged ballistic missile launches, a government official said.

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles, believed to be versions of the Scud, off its east coast toward the Sea of Japan on June 29.

North Korea is banned from using ballistic missile technology under U.N. Security Council resolutions.
