新潟県産の日本酒の輸出量が、２０１３年に１７１万５４４０リットルとなり、過去最高を更新したことが、県酒造組合のまとめで分かった。
　海外での日本酒、和食ブームを追い風に、組合や各酒造会社は、海外での新潟清酒の認知度やブランド力の更なる向上に努めている。
　組合のまとめによると、記録がある１９９１年の９９９３リットルから輸出量は毎年伸び続け、９８年に１０万リットルを、２０１１年に１００万リットルを超えた。直近の４年は前年比１７～３５％の伸びで推移し、１３年も同２４・７％の大幅な伸びを示した。
　組合加盟の酒造会社９２社のうち、１３年に輸出したのは７割に当たる６４社。１０年前からほぼ倍増している。

A sightseeing train derailed in Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Saturday morning, injuring 15 passengers.
Of the 15 people taken to a hospital, three were severely injured, including to the head and chest, but their lives are not considered to be at risk, said Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu).
The Ibusuki no Tamatebako No. 2 train on the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line derailed shortly after 11 a.m., apparently after hitting a landslide caused by heavy rain. The Japan Transport Safety Board sent two inspectors to the accident site.
According to JR Kyushu and a local fire department, 47 passengers and crew members were aboard the two-car train at the time of the accident. The injured people were quoted as saying that they fell down hard when the train hit the earth and sand from the landslide.

The Defense Ministry will conduct full-fledged studies on new missile defense systems that would better equip Japan to intercept North Korean ballistic missiles, officials said.
The ministry has started consultations with the United States on introducing the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and a ground-based version of the Standard Missile-3 interceptors mounted on Aegis destroyers, according to the officials.
Currently, the Self-Defense Forces employs a two-stage system to intercept ballistic missiles. In the first phase, Aegis ships launch SM-3 missiles to destroy in outer space a missile or its debris believed to be targeted at Japan. If that fails, the ground-based Patriot Advance Capability-3 surface-to-air missile system is used for interception.
The studies by the ministry will focus on missile interception between the two current stages.

The government will step up efforts to urge firms and industry groups to actively deal in products made in Fukushima Prefecture, home to the crippled No. 1 nuclear power plant, informed sources said Saturday.
The government will make the request under new guidelines aimed at preventing rumors about agricultural and marine products from the prefecture and nearby areas arising from concern over radiation.
The guidelines will be officially approved at a working group meeting of related agencies to take place at the Reconstruction Agency on Monday, the sources said.
More than three years after the magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck the Tohoku region on March 11, 2011, rumors continue to have a serious impact on the farm and tourism sectors of the disaster-hit areas, especially Fukushima, which bore the brunt of the ensuing nuclear crisis at the No. 1 plant.

NASA is preparing a July 1 launch for its first satellite dedicated to measuring atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that plays a key role in climate change.
Carbon dioxide levels have reached their highest point in at least 800,000 years, according to the U.S. space agency.
The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite is very similar to its predecessor, OCO-1, which was destroyed during its launch in February 2009.
The satellite is expected to help provide a more complete and global picture of man-made and naturally occurring carbon dioxide emissions as well as the effects of carbon “sinks,” like oceans and forests, which absorb and trap the gas.

Japan and the United States are set to expand the scope of rear area assistance the Self-Defense Forces would provide to the American military in contingencies involving the Korean Peninsula as they seek to revise their defense cooperation guidelines later this year, a government source said Saturday in Tokyo.
In the revised guidelines, the two countries also envision protection by the SDF of U.S. vessels vigilant for missile launches or transporting Japanese nationals in the event the United States comes under armed attack.
In the first change of the guidelines in 17 years, the two sides also contemplate promotion of joint use of military bases by the SDF and U.S. forces, tighter surveillance and monitoring of areas near the Japan-held but disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea and cooperation over cyberattacks and defense equipment, according to the source. The Senkaku Islands are also claimed by China.
Those points are expected to be included in an interim report to be compiled in September that will form the framework of revision in the defense cooperation guidelines.

Scientists said last week that they had unraveled the genome of a eucalyptus tree, gaining insights into its fast growth and adaptability that could one day enhance forests grown for biomass and timber.
Eucalyptus is native to Australia, but has become the most widely-cultivated hardwood tree. It is an important source of paper, wood and essential oils grown in more than 100 countries on six continents.
It is are also considered a potentially major source of biofuels.
A team of scientists have sequenced the genetic code of one of the most widely bred species: Eucalyptus grandis.

According to six major domestic carriers serving Okinawa the number of passengers flying to Okinawa in May increased 11.2 percent compared to last year.
That is 1.21 million passengers in total traveled to Okinawa in May. The carriers cited a major increase in the number of passengers flying between Haneda in Tokyo and Naha, including both groups and individuals. Another major increase in numbers was seen between Naha and Itami Airport in Osaka. Extra flights during the Golden Week also played a big role.

A construction crew found a WWII era unexploded bomb in Onoyama Park in Naha, Tuesday. The JGSDF Bomb Disposal Unit removed the dud in the afternoon on the same day.
The bomb was removed starting 3 p.m. causing an evacuation of 110 residents from an area within 160 meters from the site. The evacuation started at 2:30 and the work was completed by 4 p.m.

The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory is predicting that Okinawa is likely to experience abnormally hot days for a week beginning Saturday.
The Observatory has issued a warning for high temperatures and say there is a 30% chance that the mercury is likely to soar higher than average, and that the heat wave is likely to last at least a week. Officials at the observatory urge people to take appropriate precautions when engaging in outdoor activities. They also urge the elderly to make sure that their air conditioning or electric fans are in working order to avoid the risk of a heat stroke.

18 of 20 bands to perform at the 32nd Peaceful Love Rock Festival have been selected. This year’s lineup also includes bands from Korea and Taiwan.
Performers for the last two slots are going to be decided after an audition on June 21st.

Naha Police arrested 67-year-old, unemployed Yoshihiko Tomori on suspicion of an attempting to murder a 50-year-old friend by stabbing him with a knife, on Sunday.
According to Naha City Police Tomori is denying the charges saying, “It wasn’t my intention to kill him”. The victim was stabbed on the side of his neck, and shoulders, but none of his injuries are life threatening.
Tomori was arrested Sunday afternoon in his residence in Maejima, Naha City where the incident occurred after the injured man went to a hospital to seek for treatment, and the hospital staff reported the incident to police.
According to Naha Police, the two were drinking together and started a fight. Tomori then attacked the victim from behind.
