Hong Kong police arrested more than 500 people Wednesday after tens of thousands in the former British colony joined a massive march to push for democracy.
Anger at mainland China has never been greater after Beijing warned recently it holds the ultimate authority over the freewheeling capitalist enclave despite agreeing to a Basic Law that gave the city a high degree of autonomy for 50 years after British rule ended in 1997.
Police said 511 people were arrested for unlawful assembly and preventing police from carrying out their duties.
Police said 98,600 people joined Tuesday’s rally at its peak, while organizers said 510,000 turned out, the highest estimates in a decade. Hong Kong University researchers put the number at between 154,000 and 172,000.

Japan is at a historic crossroads in amending its long-held pacifist defense posture, a move that it may never reverse. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet formally reinterpreted the war-renouncing Article 9 on Tuesday, reading the Constitution as permitting at least partial use of the right of collective self-defense.
Administration officials and New Komeito lawmakers defend the decision by saying Japan will only use the right under strict conditions.
But many critics, including uncounted numbers of ordinary citizens, doubt the conditions will in reality serve as restraints. They suspect Abe’s aggressive constitutional reinterpretation could eventually allow Japan to wage a war that has far less relevance to the nation’s self-defense.
“What is critical is the fact that it is the government that would judge” whether the self-imposed conditions are met, said Koichi Nakano, a political science professor at Sophia University in Tokyo.

The dollar moved narrowly around ¥101.50 in Tokyo trading Wednesday ahead of major economic events Thursday.
At 5 p.m., the dollar was quoted at ¥101.49-50, little changed from ¥101.50-52 at the same time Tuesday. The euro stood at $1.3670-3674, down from $1.3692-3692, and at ¥138.75-77, down from ¥138.99-139.00.
The dollar edged up to around ¥101.60 late in the morning as Tokyo stocks advanced after the Dow Jones industrial average closed at a record high overnight, traders said.
Another dollar-positive factor was a bigger than expected trade deficit incurred by Australia in May, which triggered sales of the Australian dollar for the U.S. currency, according to traders.

North Korea on Wednesday fired two short-range projectiles into waters off its east coast, South Korean officials said, on the eve of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s talks in Seoul expected to focus on the North’s nuclear weapons program.
The launches, the third in a week, were believed to be sending a message that the North is boosting its defenses and expressing its displeasure that Xi will become the first Chinese leader to visit rival South Korea before the North, analysts say.
Japan, which is currently engaged in talks with North Korea on the past abductions of Japanese citizens, has protested the tests, calling them “extremely regrettable”.
The projectiles, with a range of 180 km (110 miles), were fired from the eastern coastal city of Wonsan and harmlessly landed in the sea Wednesday morning, South Korean defense officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of department rules.

A search is underway for two Japanese sisters who went missing on the Pacific island of Saipan after their rental car was not returned on time and they failed to board their scheduled flight home, police said Wednesday.
They said there is evidence that the two tourists, one of them 33 and the other in her late 20s, had an inflatable raft in their possession, and that the raft has not yet been accounted for.
The tourists were last spotted by hotel staff on Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Mariana Resort & Spa where they were staying. Their rental car was later found parked at a beach just north of the resort, with their belongings still inside, according to police and local media reports.
The women, whose names were not released, arrived in Saipan on Saturday morning and were scheduled to leave early Monday morning. The car rental company alerted the resort after noticing that the car they borrowed had not been returned on time, and the resort then informed the authorities.

Their Senate majority in peril, anxious Democrats have seized the Supreme Court decision that some companies need not provide birth control to women as fresh evidence of the Republicans’ “war on women” — an argument they hope will energize female voters who could decide the balance of power in Congress.
Republicans aggressively cheered the high court’s decision, but their leaders concede that their party must tread carefully. Even before Monday’s decision was announced, GOP operatives coached their candidates to cast the ruling as a victory for religious freedom and further evidence that the country’s health care law is deeply flawed.
“Republicans have to be careful about not appearing as though they’re anti-contraception. This is a constitutional issue,” said Katie Packer Gage, a Republican strategist whose firm advises the party on navigating women’s issues. “We have to be very, very cautious as a party.”
The Republicans for years have tried to make inroads with two groups that tend to favor Democrats: women and younger voters. As popular as the court’s decision will be with the Republican base, it is likely to be just as unpopular this election year and into 2016 with those who depend on insurance to pay for birth control — a group that includes women and younger voters.

米軍普天間飛行場（宜野湾市）の同県名護市辺野古への移設の是非が争点となるのは必至で、移設先の埋め立てを承認した現職・仲井真弘多ひろかず氏（７４）は、３０日の県議会で「早い時期に態度を決めたい」と述べ、３選出馬に向けて最終調整に入ったことを明らかにした。
　仲井真氏は、県議会代表質問で知事選への対応を問われ、「多くの人々から次の選挙に向けて『頑張れ』との声援をいただいている。その趣旨を踏まえて、なるべく早い時期に与党と相談のうえ、態度を決めたい」と語った。安倍首相（自民党総裁）も３０日、首相官邸で河村建夫党選挙対策委員長と会談し、「どういう方が良いのか、しっかりと検討するように」と指示した。
　知事選にはすでに、保守系ながら「反辺野古」を掲げる翁長おなが雄志たけし・那覇市長（６３）が出馬の意向を固めている。保守、革新を問わず、県内に根強い反辺野古勢力の受け皿になろうとの戦略だ。
　仲井真氏の心中について、知事周辺は「反辺野古の知事が誕生すれば、道筋を付けてきた普天間問題や振興策を台無しにされるとの危機感が強く、やる気になっている」と解説する。

２００１年に債務不履行（デフォルト）に陥ったアルゼンチンが３０日、債務利払い（８億３２００万ドル＝約８４０億円）の期限を迎えた。
　同日中に支払えなければ３０日間の猶予期間に入る見通しだ。債権者である米投資ファンドなどとの交渉は難航している模様で、再度のデフォルトを回避できるかは微妙な状況だ。
　米最高裁は６月１６日、アルゼンチン政府に対し、同国債を購入した米投資ファンドに債務の全額を返済するように命じた。アルゼンチンは、債権整理に応じた債権者（全体の約９割）にのみ、利息などの支払いを行ってきた。だが、判決で、米ファンドに返済しないと、これらの債権者への利払いも行えなくなった。

米サンフランシスコ市で２９日、同性愛者やその支持者たちが市内の目抜き通りを歩いて権利を訴える年に１度の大規模なパレードがあり、地元メディアなどによると、１０万人以上が集まった。
　参加者は同性愛への支持を表す虹色の旗を振りながらサンフランシスコ市名物のケーブルカーに乗ったり音楽に合わせて踊ったりしながらパレードした。同性愛への支持を表明している大企業の従業員グループや政治家、市民団体など、顔ぶれは様々。沿道にはびっしりと人垣ができ、虹色に髪を染めたり派手な衣装を着たりした人たちに、拍手や歓声が沸いた。
　サンフランシスコ市は１９７０年代に同性愛者の政治家をいち早く輩出するなど、同性愛者の権利擁護に積極的な町として知られる。

３０日に公開された２０１３年の国会議員の所得報告に基づき、政党別に平均を比較したところ、２６７２万円の自民党がトップとなった。
　自民党が首位となるのは、０６年分の所得報告以来、７年ぶり。所属する鳩山邦夫元総務相の個人所得が過去最高の２９億３７５７万円にのぼり、党平均全体を押し上げた格好だ。
　政党順の２位はみんなの党、３位は生活の党だった。
　分党が決まっている日本維新の会は、１２年１２月の衆院選で初当選した３８人（辞職した東国原英夫前衆院議員を除く）が初めて公開対象となった。当選１期目の衆院議員に、全議員で２位の今村洋史氏（１億３４２９万円）、５位の河野正美氏（８２４７万円）ら高所得者が含まれており、党平均（２００６万円）は全１０党中で４位となった。民主党は１６１１万円で７位。今回初登場の結いの党は１４９６万円で９位だった。

The Tokyo District Court on Monday handed former Aum Shinrikyo fugitive Naoko Kikuchi a five-year prison term for attempted murder in the 1995 Tokyo City Hall bombing but stopped short of finding her guilty on explosives charges due to lack of evidence.
The defendant “must have had some knowledge” of what she was doing while serving as an accomplice in the high-profile parcel bomb incident at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building, the ruling said.
Kikuchi, 42, was on trial for attempted murder and violating the Explosives Control Act. But the district court didn’t acknowledge her full guilt on grounds that, given the circumstances, she was probably unaware of exactly what kinds of unlawful activities she was involved in — one of which included the use of bombs. Citing ignorance, she pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Prosecutors had demanded a seven-year term. Kikuchi’s lawyers said they intend to appeal. As a devout member of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult, which rocketed to global fame when it attacked the Tokyo subway system with the nerve gas sarin in March 1995, killing 13 people and injuring thousands, Kikuchi was accused of willfully helping her Aum superiors craft and send a parcel bomb to then-Tokyo Gov. Yukio Aoshima.

The pro-Pyongyang group Chongyron paid a deposit Monday to prevent for now the sale of its Tokyo headquarters building and land, sources said.
The ¥100 million deposit, filed with the Tokyo Legal Affairs Bureau, was a condition set by the Supreme Court for suspension of a permit allowing sale of the property to real estate developer Marunaka Holdings Co. for ¥2.21 billion.
The suspension of the sale, which came one day before Japan and North Korea were to start a new round of talks in Beijing, will stand until the Supreme Court makes a decision on an appeal by Chongryon against the permit.
Chongryon collected the deposit money from Korean residents close to the association, the sources said.
